Privacy policy, in plain language

PawWarning exists to warn you before a storm frightens your dog — not to collect data about you. This page explains exactly what we collect, where it lives, and how it reaches your phone as an alert. Last updated September 2026 · Policy version V1.

    What we collect

    • Your location. The place name or postcode you type during setup (an Eircode in Ireland, a postcode elsewhere). We convert it to map coordinates so we can watch for thunderstorms near you. We never use your phone's GPS and we never track your movements.
    • Device push token. An anonymous code from your device's notification service (Firebase Cloud Messaging) so storm alerts can reach your phone. It contains no personal details and works without an account.
    • An anonymous install ID. A random identifier kept on your device so the app can remember your settings between visits.
    • Your email address — only if you sign in. Optional, used for your subscription and account. Pet owners who use the app without an account never give us an email.
    • Payment details — only if you subscribe. Handled entirely by Stripe. We see your plan and billing status; we never see or store your card number.
    • Your consent choice. When you press Accept or Decline on the banner, we record what you chose, when, and your browser type, so we can prove we respected it.

    How it is stored

    • Your location, alert settings and consent choice are kept on your own device, in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser data removes them.
    • Your push token and (if you sign in) your account details are stored in our encrypted cloud database, hosted in the EU. Your typed location is stored as coordinates linked to your device or account — never your name and address.
    • Location lookups are cached to avoid hammering the map service; the cache holds only the place name or postcode and its coordinates.
    • We keep basic records that alerts were sent (which location, which time) to prevent duplicate notifications and to debug problems. These contain no personal details beyond the push token or account ID.

How it is used for alerts

Your coordinates are checked against live lightning-strike networks, official national weather service warnings (Met Éireann in Ireland, the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia, MetService in New Zealand) and thunderstorm forecast models. When a storm is heading your way, we send a push notification to your device using the stored token — a Storm heads-up when strikes are detected or imminent, and a Thundery watch earlier in the day when the forecast shows a risk.

We share your coordinates with those weather and lightning data providers only to calculate your alerts. They receive a map position, never your identity. Your data is never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to build a profile of you.

    Your choices and rights

    • Analytics are optional. Declining them changes nothing about your alerts.
    • You can review or change your consent choice at any time using the button below, which brings the banner back.
    • You can remove your location and settings any time from the in-app settings, or delete your account from the account page.
    • To have anything else erased, or for any data question, email ledwith.m@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days, as GDPR requires.
